Kiln Construction

In 2004, as the first recipient of the AIA Local Society Incentive Grant, the AIA Tucson chapter set out to build a kiln in the ancient Greek form and use it for both educational purposes and community outreach. This project shifted the traditional focus of experimental archaeology from the recreation of ancient Greek pottery shapes and surface decoration to the actual construction of a kiln and the process of firing pottery. Today, the kiln project gives university students, local schools, and community members a chance to participate in recreating this important historical process.
